Best bicycle concepts, developments and accessories of 2021

This year we’ve seen a lot of news on bikes and bike accessories, from crazy concepts to practical modifications. Our favorites are those that are both crazy and practical, like the Cercle Bicycle, a thesis project by industrial design student Berhard Sobotta.

Probably not as practical, but certainly eye-catching, is designer Stephan Henrich’s concept of the “infinite” wheeled bicycle.

Not practical either, but you just had to be careful: this maniac replaced his bike wheels with sawmill blades, to ride on frozen lakes.

Speaking of metal wheels, a startup is releasing shape memory alloy METL bicycle tires. They licensed the technology to NASA for their Mars Rover tires.

The same guy who made the sawmill bladed wheels also made these DIY PVC airless bicycle tires.

From Germany comes the Convercycle, a bike that turns into a cargo bike.

If you already have a cargo bike, CargoDrive allows you to swap out the front wheel of your bike for e-bike loading capacity.

If you want to haul goods with a regular bike, take a look at the Ein, a “weightless” bicycle trailer that uses an electric motor to negate its own weight.

The Trailerduck could do Ein’s better. This is a self-powered bicycle trailer that can carry 600 pounds.

The bike as established? This is just one configuration of the Cake Ösa, a utility electric bicycle.

Gocycle’s G4 quick-folding electric bike has garnered a lot of attention this year.

Cycling in cold weather? Polar Plugs are heated inserts for handlebars.

If you’re looking for a more comfortable grip, a startup called Personomic says their custom-made silicone bike grips provide better support and less pain.

And speaking of less pain, this New Zealand company offers more comfortable handlebars made from shock-absorbing bamboo.

If it’s a more comfortable saddle you’re after, Specialized says its S-Works Romin EVO saddle, which features a carbon fiber shell and 3D printed rubber-like polymer, is designed to fit. compress in the right places.

We launched a “yes or no? On this bicycle turn signal that activates when you look to the side.

A startup called Oonee says it can put an end to bike theft by providing free storage modules in public spaces.

We took a look at the longest indoor mountain bike trail in the world.

During the pandemic, we were fascinated to learn that for safety reasons, children in Barcelona cycle to school in massive crowds called “bicycle buses”.

And for the opposite of safety, we also ran into these grown men running downhill on tiny kids’ bikes.
